Dear Reader,

This summer, the Nature Net team (Brenna, Betsy, and I) decided that we would like to take some time to highlight all of the wonderful things our member sites do to promote environmental education and to share many of the exciting programs and events offered to families like you.  With 16 member sites, it is often difficult to keep up with all that each site has to offer, they’re doing so many incredible things!  My goal is to visit each of our member sites throughout the summer months so I can get a better idea of what opportunities exist for families at each site.  I will be posting “Nature Net Site Spotlight” blog posts throughout the rest of the summer.  I hope that you and your family will find this helpful in planning activities for the summer months and beyond.

Enjoy,

Kelsey

Wisconsin River – Blackhawk Island

My Visit:

During my visit, I was able to tour the property and learn a little more about the history of the camp and some of the programs that Upham Woods offers.  Visiting groups have many options to consider when planning a trip to Upham.  The facility offers a variety of programs and activities for all ages and group types, including day and overnight programs.  Here is a brief highlight of what Upham Woods has to offer:

Cabins

Visitors to Upham Woods can choose to stay in either cabins or the dormitory.  Overnight visits allow groups to stay for up to five days, meaning groups have more time for activities and programs and can make the most of their Upham Woods experience.  The rustic cabin hill also includes a new Riverview Reflection Circle, which is a great place for groups to meet up as well as view the beautiful Wisconsin River.

Nature Center Wet Lab

The Nature Center has classrooms available for many types of activities.  The building features a wet lab where students can observe samples under a microscope.  They can also interact with many animals: snakes, turtles, geckos, and other amphibians, as well as a hawk and owl that were rescued.  There are open spaces for lessons with more physical activity and even an indoor tree house!

Canoes and Kayaks for Group Tours

My favorite part of Upham Woods is the waterfront area.  The camp has a beach area for swimming, canoes and kayaks for group tours, and even a small barge for transporting groups across the river to Blackhawk Island.  This island has so much to explore: caves, miles of trails, and great views of the river and wildlife.
