MMoCA’s Gallery Night & Nature is Healing Opening
May 6, 2022 @ 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Olbrich Botanical Gardens hosts a pop-up gallery showcasing local artists of many mediums for MMoCA’sSpring Gallery Night. Olbrich’s lobby will transform into a gallery space creating an opportunity for the community to preview and purchase art work, and participate in artist presentations.
Featured artist, Maria Amalia Wood, will give an artist talk at 6:30 to connect with the audience about her experience as an immigrant and how her practice is informed by immigration. Her work delves into the complexities of a life lived between Central America and the Midwestern United States.
Maria will do an interactive paper making demo for kids and adults – make your own paper, and paint pre-made butterfly seed bombs! While supplies last.
NATURE IS HEALING
May 6 – June 19
Opening on Gallery Night – Exhibited in the outdoor gardens near the Serenity Garden
Olbrich Botanical Gardens collaborates with local artist, Angela Johnson, to present Nature is Healing, an outdoor installation utilizing cyanotype prints of natural materials.
Designed to create a (safe outdoor) space for the community to come together and process the collective grief from the pandemic, the installation provides an opportunity for healing through shared experience.
Discovered in the mid-1800’s, cyanotypes are a camera-less contact photo printing process involving exposure to the sun. Several of the prints will incorporate imagery of plants native to Wisconsin, sourced from Olbrich Botanical Gardens.
Funding provided by the Madison Arts Commission’s BLINK grant program.
