Water is one of those resources we often take for granted here in Wisconsin. Unlike Western states, which often face water constraints and shortages, we often have too much water. Yet there are uses of water in Wisconsin, especially groundwater, that are not sustainable in terms of both quantity and quality. Our water resources and the law governing the use of water have shaped the development of our state. Today we must think about managing both water quantity and water quality issues for a sustainable future.

Carl Sinderbrand and Paul Kent are attorneys in the Madison area who have been personally involved in some of the key legislative and judicial decisions on water law in Wisconsin. They are also on the Board of the Friends of the Arboretum.

Their talk will review some of the basics of Wisconsin water law, its history, the need for effective regulations, and the challenges that lie ahead for managing water quality and quantity for both surface water and groundwater resources.
